We at the Ascribing Artists Blog are delighted to add Lisa Riccardi's web link to the artists links. Please check out her site at http://litistudios.blogspot.com/ and visit her studio at 16 Main Gallery, 16 Main St., Madison, AL.

Many have asked Lisa why she signs her work with EX 31 instead of her name. Lisa explains "EX 31 stands for the 31st chapter of the book of Exodus in which we learn that the Lord had chosen specific people and filled them with the skill they needed to build the Tent of Meeting and all of the articles of worship. I believe we have been given abilities from Him which we need to exercise and make sure He gets the honor every time."

Keep a watch for her featured artist spot on the Ascribing Artist Blog.

Scripture: Exodus 31
Bezalel and Oholiab
1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 2 “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. 6 Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent— 8 the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, 9 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its stand— 10 and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.”

Huntsville Times- Kay Campbell Interviews Ascribing Artist Diane Lehr

Kay Campbell interview: Spiritual Journey: Diane Lehr
In Faith & Values Section of The Huntsville Times Friday, Jan.21,2011

ATHENS, AL -- Name: Diane Lehr

Faith home: I'm a Christian, but I find it difficult to tell people what church I attend, although I love my church very much. It's like telling people what team you are for and that immediately divides people.

Work: I spent over 25 years as an R.N., primarily pediatric. Currently, I am an artist and a community servant with two non-profit boards, Spirit of Athens for downtown revitalization and Art On the Square Arts League in Athens.

Role model: I have many role models. I believe that my taste and the art I create is eclectic, mixed media and child-like. Most of my role models have been more solid in their belief systems than I, and I have been inspired by them, without becoming them.
I believe we are all called to be who we are meant to be in God's purpose for us. Not God's general will, but personally for each one of us.

A tough time faith helped you through: My mother had cancer from 1997-1999. I would take charge, do all I could do to help, and then I'd say, "God, please please please... OK. Now I've got to do all these other things and then I'll get back to you, God."
I was with her through much suffering as she fought the disease. By May 1999, she was very sick from chemo and unable to get out of bed.

Then, on May 24, I was shot in the back on my front porch by an armed assailant known in Memphis as The Evergreen Phantom... Continued at link below

The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival announces a "Call to all Artists"

The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival announces a call to all artists to submit pieces for a new juried art exhibition on the theme of roosters. "Rooster Call" will be held in conjunction with the seventh annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival set for April 9-10, 2011 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton, AL.

We are very excited about this new aspect of the Festival. While it is open to any artist 18 years old or older in the United States, there are many talented artists right here in Alabama and we look forward to seeing how many different ways a rooster can be portrayed!

Previous festivals have been successful in presenting music and storytelling to the community. And, while we have had a variety of arts and crafts vendors on hand, there has been a lack of visual arts for festival-goers to appreciate.

Below, you will find more details on the juried competition. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please forward the information on to them.

Sincerely,

Vicki Morese, Event Coordinator
Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival

BE THE FIRST IN THE ROOSTER HALL OF FAME

The jury panel will select one Best of Show artist, a second place, and a third place. The Best of Show recipient wins a $500 cash prize, a listing in the Rooster Hall of Fame, and the opportunity for the work to be featured in future promotions. Second place and third place will be awarded $300 and $200, respectively. The winning submission will be determined by creative vision, innovation, potential to engage an audience, and overall impression. In addition, 12 pieces will be selected and featured in a new calendar for 2012.

All artistic mediums will be accepted, and along with roosters, artwork on the theme of hens, chicks and eggs are encouraged.

PUBLIC VIEWING OF ARTWORK

All artwork submitted will be on exhibit for public viewing at Art Inspirations of the Valley located at 552 Lawrence Street in Moulton from March 1 to April 29, 2011 and will be presented at the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival on April 9-10, 2011.

MEET THE JURORS

Johanna Littleton (Ascribing Artist)
Johanna is a former graphics design editor/illustrator, elementary/middle school teacher, and college professor who now spends most of her time in her third floor studio at Lowe Mill Working Artists Studios in Huntsville, Alabama. She works primarily in acrylic and mixed media and is a member of the Decatur Art Guild, Watercolor Society of Alabama, and the Huntsville Arts Council.

Janet Townsend
Janet holds an art degree from Connecticut College. Throughout her career, Townsend has exhibited in several galleries in the New England states and metropolitan New York and is a previous member of the National Arts Club in new York City. She has taught many art classes, worked as a commissioned oil portrait artist and commercial photographer. After retiring to Town Creek, Alabama, she opened a small studio at her home near the Tennessee River.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years of age or older residing in the united States. All entries shall be original work produced by the artist within the past two years. Artwork may be marketed for sale at prices determined by the artist. The Lawrence County Arts Council will retain a 30% commission fee on any sale of art from the exhibition.

Entry fee for up to two submissions is $25 and each additional entry is $5. The deadline for entries is February 4, 2011 and those selected will be notified beginning February 14, 2011. Shipped artwork is due February 23-25 and hand-delivered art is due February 28.

Artists interested in entering can visit www.alabamachickenandeggfestival.com for complete submission requirement and an entry form. Or, for more information, call 256.905.0700.

Please note: Artists renting vendor space are ineligible for the juried exhibition and will have an opportunity to win prizes and recognition through an open arts and crafts competition. Arts and crafts vendors interested in exhibiting can click here for more information and to download an application.

Art News from Ascribing Artist, Betty Burchfield

Art News from Ascribing Artist, Betty Burchfield:

I'd like to share with my Ascribing Artist friends a page on my site that speaks for itself. This has been such a rewarding experience. I have had the pleasure of making a new friend. We have worked together to capture these two paintings together especially the Prom painting. There was little detail in the old photo and Ron helped me to see it through his eyes.

I am so thankful for this God Given Talent of painting in oils. It is such a good feeling knowing that I am creating a visual picture that will last forever.

Both Nancy and Ron wrote poems to each other. On this page is one of Nancy's poems to Ron.

They both were so blessed to have many years together with that special kind of love and respect for each other.

Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.

Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point you to the only ONE worthy of praise.

Ascribing Artists Exhibit: All His Colors on display January 1st – 31st.

HUNTSVILLE, AL. - When Peter Grant joined the U.S. Army, his relationship with painting vanished.

It wasn’t until 1996 when he retired in Huntsville that the one-time artist would rekindle his passion for the arts.

“I was talking to my daughter about painting again, and she suggested that I return to painting and paint the things I love,” Grant said.

The artist’s first love is abstract art, an art form widely misunderstood by the general public. Sadly, the 61-year-old artist is aware of people’s perceptions about abstract art and has changed his technique to conform to his audience.

“The thing I like to paint is abstract, but people don’t understand it,” he said. “I put a touch of realism in my abstract art so that people can actually recognize it.

“And as an abstract artist, the first question you always are asked is, ‘What is it?’, and ‘I don’t understand it,"’ he said. “As a painter who is just trying to get confidence, it’s an awful situation to be in.”

Jennifer Martin

My name is Jennifer Martin. I am 24, married, and have the most precious baby girl named Layla Rose. Layla is truly a Godsend! I was told I couldn't have children and she has been the best thing that ever happened to me. Every time I look at her I just see how amazing God is and thank him for everything he has blessed us with.Since she was born, I have been able to stay home to draw and paint full time. I have even started a website and sold a few pictures! I have always love to draw but it became a passion about 7 years ago. I find inspiration in my little girl and nature. Any free moment I have you can find me in our loft drawing or painting something.

It is hard for me to pick my favorite scripture. Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" has always been my go-to scripture. When I feel weak, or like I can't get through something I just remember that scripture and it lifts me up. I know God is never going to give me more than I can handle or leave my side so there is truly no need to worry.

I have only been painting for about four years although I have always liked drawing and art. My artistic expression in the past has always been through music and songwriting which I still love to do but since marrying an Alabama boy and moving to this locale I have been focusing on the visual arts.

Art for me is a ministry. It is a way I can attempt to give back for all the Lord has given me and the many blessings I have received not the least of which is His mercy and grace. I am thankful for the talents he has placed inside me and want to use them for His glory and to bless the lives of others and so quite often God will put someone on my heart to paint for. It will be a piece that speaks to their personality, their journey with the Lord or something they are walking through in life and then I will gift it to them. I can't begin to tell you the delight this brings me. You would think I was the one opening a gift. The paintings I sell afford me this ministry opportunity so I appreciate each order I get and every piece I sell.

The painting above, Making Time For The Blues, was one of my first paintings and done for our worship leader who is an inspiration to me. I have always loved the blues genre and am pleased to say it hangs in his office. If you visit my website you will also see a piece I more recently did for he and his wife to honor their son Noah who is battling a rare form of brain cancer. You can pray and learn more about them at www.PrayForNoah.com

Black Velvet is Audrey Hepburn inspired and is a sold piece. Ms. Hepburn was quite a classy lady and a wonderful humanitarian.

Daisies and Butterflies was commissioned by a good friend as a gift for her daughter.
My favorite quote is "Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heal that has just crushed it." - Mark Twain

My favorite Scripture is "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delights in each step he takes and though he fall he shall not be cast down for the Lord upholds him with his hand. I have been young and now am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their seed begging for bread." Psalm 37:23-25

I’ve been painting over 40 years… and if not painting, then I was crafting. I even remember making Styrofoam and sequin ornaments at my mother’s knee with white glue and tiny pins.

I painted all through my teens and early twenties (doing several commissions along the way) I basically “crafted” during my thirties as a single mother. As I reached my forties, I wanted to jump back into painting, but didn’t quite feel clever enough to pick the brush back up. I had spent the past fifteen years painting other artist’s patterns… I then stumbled upon Donna Dewberry’s “OneStroke” and her technique got me to pick up a brush again and paint without following a pattern… I have to say though that I did not feel fulfilled. I still felt I was copying others’ work.

Then five years ago, when I felt at my lowest… God stepped in and brought me to a yahoo group site where I met 5 extremely talented artist who were getting ready to launch their own website (www.ArtApprenticeOnline.com, or AAO) to teach artists of all levels…. I also met another group of Godly women (learning from AAO) who are always just a click away with spiritual strength to remind us of what God has created for us and in us.

Then in the last seven months, God brought me another opportunity to join together with various artists to form a ‘community of artist’ in historic downtown Madison, AL that we named 16 Main Gallery, where each of us have our studio. This has been a very large milestone in my life! In the last couple of months, I’ve become the Co-Director with another wonderful artist (Michele Lee) at the gallery. We seem to agree on most issues and things have run so smoothly. We’ve filled all the studios, more people are getting to know that we are there, and not a day goes by without someone saying how wonderful our gallery is and that there is a wonderful feeling or spirit about the place.

I’m surprised each day how creative I now feel. I don’t have to use a pattern anymore. Or be a “bottle baby” (where you have to have pre-mixed bottles of all the colors you want to use) I can now mix my own colors without much thought and have a confidence I didn’t have before. Many of my friends have since told me how much I have blossomed in both my personal life and spiritual life. I am truly blessed!

I have to say that the 23rd Psalm is my favorite and memorable scripture. It was the first bible verses that I committed to memory and could recite. It was a scripture I turned to in several low points in my life and it would always lift my spirits to remember that God was always with me. It again played a memorable part this past summer at my brother’s passing. My son was not aware that his uncle had passed, but he happened to put that scripture on is Facebook page that very afternoon a couple of hours before I gave him the news. God is awesome!
