Ascribing Artists recognize that anything they do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord. The Ascribing Artists ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:1, 2 we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do. As a part of this creative ministry, Ascribing Artists is an avenue to bring together artists with this same belief and offer a creative outlet for artists who "Ascribe to the LORD."

City Intercessors: February Prayer for the Arts in the Huntsville, AL community

Just a brief explanation of what Mission Huntsville's City Intercessors are doing and an invitation to join in our prayer gathering this coming Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012.

Our group is made up of intercessors from various denominations who have a heart to see God's Kingdom come and His will be done in Huntsville/Madison County. Many Christians have been faithfully praying through the years, but this specific group has been meeting for about 2 years. Our strategy is to pray concerning what we call the 7 Mountains (7 mind-molders of culture) which are the Family, Church, Government, Education, Business, Media, Arts and Entertainment. We bless Christians working and influencing each of these spheres of culture and pray for Godly, Kingdom-minded leaders to rise to the top. We pray for each of the "mountains" using a daily prayer calendar (see Feb. 2012 attached) and meet once a month to pray together. Started out meeting in different churches, but have now moved outside the four walls and love how effective it is to pray on-site with guests who represent that particular mountain.

So this month we are praying over the mountain of Arts and Entertainment. Allison Dillon-Jauken has graciously welcomed us to come to The Arts Council office at the Von Braun Center, 700 Monroe St. Suite #2, Huntsville, AL 35801. You are welcome to come pray with us from 6 - 7pm. We'll be praying positive, Scripture-based requests that God release His love and glory through the artists of our city.

Scott wasborn in Bryan, Ohio in 1959. As a young child, Scott loved to work with hishands. He loved to tinker, repair, and build things. Even though he lacked trainingand sophisticated tools he always had a passion for woodworking. He felted energized when he could figure out asolution to a problem. Give him an idea and somehow he made it happen. He wasblessed with a rich inner life, self-discipline, and the tenacity to create artout of little to nothing.

Scott’s familymoved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1977. At the age of 19, Scott began working onthe Space Shuttle Program during its infancy. Both woodworking and the SpaceShuttle are in his blood. He has been quoted as saying, “I love working withwood, particularly exotic hard words, and I love the Shuttle.” It is evident inhis workshop—his museum—where he has pictures, plaques and models all devotedto his hobby and career. Scott recently retired after working 33 years on the SpaceShuttle Program.

Scott’s inspirationcomes from nature. When most people look at trees, they see bark, leaves andbranches. He sees beyond that to the characteristics of each type of wood andsees what it will look like when it is blended with other types of wood. All wood goes beautifully together—naturemade them that way. Scott gets a real kick out of seeing all the colors come tolife when he applies the finishing touches to a model. He crafts the one-of-a-kind shuttle art piecesout of exotic woods for astronauts, NASA personnel, and other space andwoodworking enthusiasts. Each model is thoroughly documented to ensure hedoesn’t build the same model twice. Many of his models are dedicated tomissions and signed by the astronauts who flew on that mission.

Scott iscurrently working on his book, RemoveBefore Flight, which is scheduled to be released in 2012. He is anaerospace patent holder, musician, songwriter, space historian, spacememorabilia collector, and a member of the CollectSpace website community. Scott lives in Harvest, Alabama with his wife,Dianne, and their two sons, Christian and Tyler.

Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival Announces Call for Entries for 2012 Alabama Farmers Co-op Photo Contest

Moulton, Alabama – Amateur photographers are invited to submit photographs of agricultural interest for the Alabama Farmers Co-op 2012 Photo Contest. Sponsored by Alabama Farmers Co-op (AFC), the contest is held in conjunction with the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival set for April 13-15, 2012 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton.

Photos must be related to agriculture from any location within the state of Alabama. The competition is divided into four themed categories: Life on the Farm, Livestock, Crops and Agriculture Families. Only 8”x10” color photos will be accepted and entries using a portrait format will be considered for use on the cover of Farming News, a publication of the AFC.

Prizes are awarded for each category with $125 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. In addition, each participant receives 2 free tickets to the 2012 Alabama Chicken & Egg Festival and all entries will be on display during the three day event.

“The Alabama Farmers Co-op is excited to partner with the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival to offer people of all ages a chance to show what they love most about farming in Alabama,” said Jim Allen, AFC’s director of advertising and public relations. “Previous contests have attracted a variety of wholesome images, each one telling a different story while reflecting the Co-op’s core beliefs of hard work, honesty, and family, and with this year’s contest, we are searching for that one entry that truly captures the essence of farm life in Alabama for the cover of Farming News.”

About the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival

The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival is an interactive agricultural experience offering old-fashioned fun, food vendors featuring chicken entrees prepared in a variety of ways, and live entertainment by popular regional bands and local favorites. The eighth annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival is scheduled for April 13-15, 2012 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton, Alabama. As an Ascribing Artist, I try to give all the credit to God for the gift of art that He has given me. This painting will stand out in my memory as giving back to God the gift He gave me. Making people happy is what it is all about.

A LOVE STORY

Ron and Nancy were 19 years old when they got married and very much in love. The wedding was very small as there was no one there other than the couple, the preacher and his wife as witness.. They got married without the blessing of her parents. They were married 38 years when Nancy went to be with Jesus.
One of the memories of the wedding made Ron sad. Nancy didn’t have a wedding gown! He regretted not being able to buy her one.

Between the two of us, we created this painting of Nancy in a beautiful gown and veil in front of a stained glass window such as one might see in a church. The title of this painting is “Fantasy”. His response was “this painting completed the fantasy I have of her as my Bride in an exotic bridal gown which I feel she was cheated of.

The most rewarding feeling that I have in painting is making somebody happy. Ron has since become a good friend of mine and I love to hear his memories of he and his Nancy. I’m sure that Nancy never regretted not having a wedding gown as the love that her husband gave her was more than sufficient to her. He still wears her wedding ring on a gold chain around his neck. She remains in his heart and he knows that some day they will be together in Heaven and …. LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER….

For Paul LaBathe, inspiration comes from God’s word.

A former supervisor working in a publications department, he resigned in 2002 when he could no longer escape God’s calling.

The Elkmont, AL resident started over and created Empty Tomb Graphics, a faith-based advertising business, and co-founded Ascribing Artists, a networking group of Christian artists, ranging from painters to potters.

“I believe we are all born with a desire to create not only art or music, but also as seen in carpentry, architecture, landscaping, cooking, sewing, writing, poetry and so on,” he said. “I believe this to be true because the Bible starts with, ‘In the beginning, God created’ and before we get to the end of the first chapter we read, ‘God created man in his own image.’ ”

I was raised in a military family where I had the privilege of traveling to various parts of the world. This instilled in me, at an early age, a true love and appreciation for the beauty of the world we live in. This can easily be seen in my work as I enjoy painting places I have visited.

My first artistic endeavor involved music. I have played the piano since age 9, taught piano lessons, worked as an Elementary Music Teacher, and played piano and organ on staff at several churches in Alabama. I also play the flute and enjoy singing alto.

Several years ago I took a couple of oil painting classes with my mother. It was at this time that I discovered my love for painting and art. In January of 2007 I was involved in a car accident in which I received a head injury and had to have 3 neck surgeries. I feared that I would not be able to paint anymore due to nerve damage and for over 4 years did not even try. A few months ago I picked my paint brush up again and started painting and have not put it down since then. My accident has given me a greater compassion for people, life, and the beauty around me. When I look at art, it speaks to me. Art is some of the best therapy there is. It says things to me I may not be able to verbally express at that moment.

I paints in oils and acrylics and also enjoy making jewelry. I currently reside in Huntsville, AL.

Bible Verses:

God and I have been through so much together I feel the need to share 2 verses. The first is Philippians 4:13. “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” My car accident in 2007 left me in a tremendous amount of pain and multiple injuries. Pain that sometimes I did not think I could handle. You could say that this verse saved me life. I still suffer from some of that same pain and neuropathy, but the first verse I turn to is Philippians 4:13. While recovering from my 3 different fusions surgeries there were many mornings that I would even have to pray that prayer just to get out of bed. I have also clung to this verse while recovering from my head injury and Post Traumatic Stress disorder. My favorite thing to do with this verse is to put my name in the place of the word I so that it reads “Kala can do all things through Christ who strengthens her.” I praise God for the strength He has given me since that day in 2007.

The second verse is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This is an absolutely tremendous verse. God has a plan for us and it is full of hope. My life was turned upside down in a blink of an eye in 2007. All of my plans had to be erased. In that car accident I acquired a head injury that gave me a 90% chance of being in a vegetative state the rest of my life. But God left me here for a reason. I clung to whatever reason He had and Jeremiah 29:11. My life is totally different know, but I imagine that is part of God’s plan. Is it easy? Honestly, I don’t think anyone’s life is easy. That is why these two verses help me get through the difficult days. If you have found that your life has been turned upside recently, I pray that you turn to Jesus. We may not always know what His plan is, but I am so thankful that He does.

I still hesitate to call myself an artist, but I do know that I love to create and it’s when I’m creating that I have some of my best times communing with my Lord. I’ve found that when I’m painting and creating ‘my girls’ I’m talking with God throughout the entire process – not about where to put what on the canvas, but instead about needs in my friends’ lives, and… in my own. About desires I have for Him to continue to lead my family, even as our boys are establishing their lives as independent adults. About the guidance that I continually need from Him as I go through life’s journey… – about His goodness.

And somehow, in my art, He’s speaking to me. Or, perhaps more accurately, I’m slowing down enough to hear His voice… As I put layer upon layer on ‘my girls’ He’s helping me remove the layers of all the world throws at me and focus solely on His goodness. ‘My girls’ are called Soul Sisters and I pray that the Lord can use them to touch someone’s heart – their soul – just when they need His touch most. And, He does. I created one way back in February that stated, “She Stood Tall in the Storm” and it was purchased in June by a lady who lost her entire house during the April tornadoes. Don’t you just love how our God works? That’s the kind of thing I want to be a part of – so I put my trust in Him – that He will use my little efforts at creativity to His Glory.

And whatever my creative efforts might be – mixed media, painting, knitting, scrapbooking [yes – I said it,] gardening, photography, etc. – I use it as an opportunity to slow down and be still [Psalm 46:10] and [truly] know The Creator of all creation. And I encourage you to take the time to be still as well, in whatever way best fits your life right now, take a moment to listen to His voice….

You look at the beauty of a tree with its flowing branches and colorful leaves. They are a work of art that provides oxygen to sustain us and shade to cool us. But most don’t think of the beauty that is within. I learned in Jr High wood shop of this inner beauty.

Today I use hundreds of species as a palette to create marquetry. What started as a hobby turned into a way to not only show this beauty , not only keep this 2000 year old art alive, but most importantly to show my love for and to Glorify the God who gave me this gift.

The marquetry I produce covers a variety of subjects and is not only inlayed into cabinetry, tables for boat and yachts, natural pieces such as tree roots and cypress stumps but also wall hangings.

However no matter the completed piece, my hope and prayer is that my art will always praise Him and that you feel His presence when you see it.
Hardly a day goes by that I do not work on a piece of marquetry as every minute I spend on it I am spending time with God and each minute of our life should be with Him. One of my favorite sayings to remind me of this is “Make what you do today important because you are trading a day of your life for it.”

I started drawing cartoon characters of horses, dogs and cats when I was in grade school in order to entertain my friends. My love for animals and art has developed over the years to be my passion for painting. Aspiring to be be a contemporary master of portrait painting, I went to New York in 2010 to study with Daniel Greene to learn more about portrait painting. I was awe-inspired by his techniques and philosophies and apply what I learned to pet portraits as well as people portraits. I have a way to make animals look very distinguished as someone would a human portrait.

Graduating with a BSBA in Marketing, I have owned and managed several businesses over the years. After a long sabbatical from holding a pencil for serious drawing, I picked it up and began to draw again in 2001. After entering and winning some contests with my pencil drawings of horses, I decided to make it more than a hobby. I took two years of acrylic lessons from Barbara Miller in Huntsville, Alabama. I am self taught in pencil, charcoal, watercolor and mosaics. I also have taken casting classes and cold and hot metal working classes for jewelry. I continue educating myself through self-study, the influence of Daniel Greene, Igor Babailov, and many others I admire.

I have won several awards for pencil and acrylic paintings in Alabama, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. My artwork hangs worldwide. I consider myself a minimalist painter of single subjects. I like the power of simplicity and the impact of color, light and contrast.

I am a full time artist and love to spend some of my time inspiring others by teaching them to see the world differently, and create their own unique style of art.

I contribute all of my passion and success to our Maker, Jehovah-God. He is the ultimate master of creating art.

Exhibit "INVISIBLE", Presented by K.I.D Artist Collective will be in the 2nd Floor Connector at Lowe Mill.

Work goes up Sept 17th and the closing reception is October 22, 4-7pm :)

There will be donation barrels from the Mission so folks can donate food for the duration of the show, too.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Martina Svoboda defines multitasking.

The Czech Republic native is a wife, mother to a 3-year-old boy, volunteer, blogger and entrepreneur. Most can attest it’s a heavy, sometimes wearisome workload, yet Svoboda manages her hectic schedule with poise, modestly claiming “I’m a midnight worker.”

Amid such a bundle of responsibilities, it’s difficult to believe she has time for a hobby – but she does.

Svoboda moved to Huntsville about three years ago from Hawaii with her husband due to his career. Then two years ago, she approached Huntsville Art League and asked if she could not only exhibit her handmade jewelry, but teach a range of jewelry classes for high school students and adults.

If that wasn’t enough for the uber-ambitious Svoboda, she volunteered to redesign Huntsville Art League’s website and assumed the role as publicity chair – her area of expertise.

Ascribing Artist Devotion - My Plans for You 7) Growing Pains

Greetings!

Continuation from last Ascribing Artists devotional: We discovered the one overarching reason for suffering is for the glory of God. Don’t misunderstand me in thinking all suffering is for the glory of God. Please reread the devotion from March for further understanding. The second of five secondary reasons is related to growth, our spiritual growth. We see this in a set of verses we probably have all heard, but in most cases glance over or don’t fully understand. Romans 5:3-5, “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

I believe most of us glance over or don’t try to understand these verses because rejoicing in our sufferings does not only seem impossible, but really a foolish response. Who in their right mind rejoices in their sufferings? Don’t we strive as much as possible to avoid suffering and be comfortable? This is our fallen nature’s natural response.

God’s Word says we can rejoice knowing, “suffering produces endurance.” A simple analogy would be the training of a cross-country runner. In the beginning, the work that the runner had to suffer through to run 1 or 2 miles made running 5 or 6 miles easier, until one day a full marathon is achieved and at that point the suffering to run 1 or 2 miles seems laughable. Suffering does produce endurance.

God’s Word says we can rejoice knowing, “endurance produces character.” Out of the endurance of suffering character is produced.

We could chew on the depths of that truth for a long time, but to use another analogy, think of refining silver. Silver in its natural state is filled with impurities. The old process of refining silver was to heat it causing the impurities or dross to rise to the surface and then be skimmed off. When the heat is turned up and the pressure is on, what comes to the surface of your life? Anger? Addiction? Bitterness? Despair? Disbelief? _______? As believers, who still sin, God makes us aware of the dross in our lives not as a way of condemnation, but in the hope of confession and repentance, where He works to skim it from our lives. He knows our sinfulness! The question is, do we?

God’s Word says we can rejoice knowing, “character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.” Character builds confidence giving the runner hope that they will win the prize, because of all the suffering that went into training. But listen to this, as Christians our hope in gaining victory is not sealed by our might, but “through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Hallelujah!

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:6,7

As an artist, I am a beginner learning about visual balance. Some of my paintings look abstract; but while I admire abstract paintings, my work is representational. I enjoy translating the things I see in the physical world, putting them down on the restricted, flat space of a canvas. It's a challenge to produce anything that is as pleasing as the original experience of seeing the world.

I use acrylics and look forward to trying other types of paint. I have been painting for less than two years, but I spent years thinking about what I want to paint. Now, thanks to God, I have the space and time to begin experimenting. Subjects that are compelling to me not only have nice lines, they are icons commonly used or commonly recognized in American culture. I like to create interesting contrasts between linear, industrial-type subject matter and soft, flowing media (paints, fabric).

The seventh annual juried art exhibition, "Unique Views of Huntsville,” will be hosted by the Huntsville Art League and shown at the new and highly acclaimed Gallery on the Square, in downtown Huntsville. The exhibit is on display from August 16 - 28, 2011. “Unique Views of Huntsville” started as a special event during Huntsville's bi-centennial year in 2005, it has become one of the best attended and enjoyed exhibits. Over 100 works, created by local Tennessee Valley artists, are on display.

The Gallery on the Square is located at 200 Westside Square, and the hours are 11AM-6PM daily. The show is free to the public.

In the past couple of years, I have expanded my portfolio to include mixed media and continue to experiment with different processes as well as painting with oils to create large, colorful pieces of work. Creativity, imagination and passion are present in my expansive portfolio.

The beauty of vertical spaces with hints of unexpected color is the driving force behind my mixed media works of art. I lay down layers of paint on tarpaper and then cuts back into the surface forming unexpected organic lines. Then I apply wax and rub it with an oil based glaze to create texture.

Whether is it the music that plays while I paint, the subject matter, or just the blessing of being able to enjoy the process of creating, I find that I am becoming more connected to my spirit through this artistic journey.

It’s exciting to watch the pieces come together as I am guided to new opportunities through both imagery and medium, to create spaces that are skewed vertically, yet visually believable. Whether a lone chair, a field of flowers, or an abstract face, vertical lines find their place in the composition. Through my artistic talents and imagination, I am able to fully express myself on the canvas.

I paint in my home studio in Decatur, Alabama.

As I struggle with the ups and downs of this hectic life, I easily become distracted and forget to appreciate the grace and goodness of God. As I paint in my studio I find myself enjoying the abundant life, enjoying the gift of making art. Whether a painting, or a song, or a new recipe, our lives are blessed because we are made to be creative! Be encouraged to create and enjoy the abundant life the God has for you!

This simple passage of scripture defines much of what it means to be Christian. To follow Christ means a life of compassion and service. It does not mean that there will not be heartache or trials. It does not mean we will not stumble and fall. Hardship is part of life, but Christ, through His atonement will be there to clear the path back to the light, bringing hope to an imperfect people trying to be better.

The account in the Gospels of the Savior calming the tempest is a compelling witness of His power and authority over the elements, His compassion and testimony of His divine nature. The story is also a lesson for us of the power of faith.

As children of our Father in Heaven, we will all face trials in this life. There will be times when the sea is raging around us. It may feel as if we are destined to fail, that the storms are too great and that we are helpless to save ourselves.

This painting depicts a range of emotions that we may all relate to when the trials come. Note the disciple on the back of the boat. He is trying to save himself, bailing water from the boat. He looks out at the storm, overcome by fear. As a result, he sits in darkness, he cannot see the Savior. The next two disciples are still trusting in their own strength, trying to right the mast and gather in the rigging, but they have started to turn to Christ and are entering into his light. Standing behind the mast, this disciple has just let go of the sail. After having done all that he could, he is turning towards the savior. His faith is displacing his fear.

The next three disciples are focused completely on the Savior, faith has nearly pushed their fears away. They look in wonder at their Lord, standing calmly before them, Master of all. Lastly, we come to Peter, kneeling at the feet of Christ. Just a moment before, the storm raging, he had the faith to lay his fears completely at the feet of the Lord and he was blessed with peace.

We will all face difficult moments in our life, when it feels that all is lost. We often try to save ourselves, but when we turn ourselves over to the Lord, having done all that we can, He will save us. We will hear those magnificent words spoken in our hearts, “Peace, be still.”

In this painting, I wanted to portray Mary in a way that I believe many mothers can relate to. She has found a brief quiet moment to contemplate. There is a little concern in her eyes, knowing that there will be pain and hardship in the life of her child, but hope as well, for she knows that God loves her and has a plan for her and her child. She smiles as she reflects on the joy she feels when thinking of her son, turning to the future, confident and anxious, but faithful.

Motherhood brings many emotions. Fear, joy, pain, and hope, concern and nearly inexpressible love can all be part of motherhood. No doubt Mary felt inadequate, but steadfast and faithful; humbled, though honored to have been chosen to have been part of Christ’s life.

Mary must have often thought of the heavenly messenger that brought her such momentous news, the miracle of his birth, the sign in the heavens, the wise men, the shepherds and angels that bore witness. As Christ grew, she surely marveled at His wisdom and obedience, knowing that he was the Son of God.

“Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19

I am an artist that was born and raised in Mesa, Az where I still reside. I am the youngest of five children. I had very supportive parents, who even when I was very young, made sure I had the materials and education to hone my talents. While attending high school I met his wife, Shari Lunt. We married, and now have three children.

I began my career studying illustration working with artists such as Robert Barrett, Don Seegmiller, James Christensen and Greg Olsen. Over the past 15 years I have worked in the video game industry as an Art Director, concept artist and freelance illustrator. For much of my career I have painted dragons and trolls or scenes from science fiction. My work can be found in products from Dungeons and Dragon’s books, World of Warcraft cards, Magic the Gathering and Star Wars.

I have studied art in Italy, France and most recently at the Grand Central Academy in New York. I have combined these experiences to expand my subject matter to create inspirational pieces in the style of some of my favorite old masters: William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and John William Waterhouse.

I have taken this year to do something I have always wanted to do, paint images of my faith. I have dedicated the year to images found in the New Testament, and I hope that through my paintings I can strengthen my own testimony of Christ and the testimonies of those who enjoy my paintings as well.

My Plans for You 6) Suffering Yields Faith

Earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes have captured our attention, changed our lives and shook our world. What are we to think? How does this kind of suffering fit in God’s plan? In the last devotion, we learned one overarching reason for suffering being for the glory of God. Then five secondary reasons for suffering as related to faith, growth, punishment, witness and comfort.

Natural disasters, unforeseen calamity and sudden harm all seem to raise the question of “Why?” The thought today, whether we actually say it or just quietly think it, is no different than in the day of Job. The reason it has not changed in over 3,500 years is because of mans strong, yet limited, sense of fairness and justice. Suffering must be punishment for wrongdoing or sin! Even Job pleaded his case before God.

In the days of Jesus, some Galileans were murdered during worship and Jesus responded by saying, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no!” - Luke 13: 2, 3a. Jesus then went on to add, “Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no!” - Luke 13: 4, 5a. The lesson here is to never judge someone by their hardships and afflictions.

So then really . . . “Why?” The answer lies in verses 3b and 5b, where Jesus repeats the statement, “But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” The answer does not lie in whether those who died are more sinful than those who were spared, but in a completely different question. The real question is, “How are you going to respond now that you have been sparred to breathe another day?” These sufferings of life make us either more defiant in our pride or more thankful in our humility. Job ultimately responded to the disasters in his life by saying, “I had heard of you (Lord) by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” - Job 42:5,6.

Suffering causes our faith to be challenged and hopefully strengthened as we learn to trust more completely in Almighty God.

For some it may be new found faith as they trust in Jesus as their Lord and Savior for the first time and for others it may be a return to faith or a deepening of faith. Jesus told his disciples on the way to see Lazarus, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may BELIEVE. But let us go to him.” - John 11:14a, 15.

So quit asking “Why?” and instead ask, “Will our breath be filled with repentance turning from sin or will we go on unchanged? Will our lives become filled with spiritual fruit or will we go on centered around self?”

“My name is Jan and own Mosaic Crosses and Crafts. I am an artist living in north Alabama. I make handcrafted wooden crosses, frames, and other shapes all using mosaic glass, stones, and glass pieces. Each and every piece is unique, not one is ever the same. Just like the way God made us (Psalm 139: 13,14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well).

I got into this business through my sister, Sara. She lived in Huntsville while her husband was serving in Afghanistan, and we would work together creating crosses to sell at local art shows. Sara moved away when her husband came home, and now it’s just me (with a little help from Chase, my husband). I enjoy creating beautiful, unique pieces through mosaic art. God made the world with so many beautiful colors, different shapes, sizes, and resources… it’s fun to use my talents to create and for display in someone’s home to enjoy! (Romans 12:6,7 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching”)

The cross represents what Christ did on the cross, may we never forget the sacrifice that was made for us! Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

God Uses Ordinary People to do Extraordinary Things!

On April 3, 2011, I was attending a 3-day Christian retreat called the Walk to Emmaus with my dad and three of my sons. I gave a talk Saturday afternoon about Christian action and one of the statements I made that day was, "God doesn't call the equipped, He equips the called". While speaking those words, I had no idea God was going to put that theory to the test with me the following day. On Sunday morning, I woke up with Him speaking to me with a very clear message.

The day before, I was looking at a couple pictures of Jesus by different artists. I made several subconscious statements to God about how I didn't like the way the artists represented Him as being some frail, weak guy. My vision of Jesus has always been a strong, handsome man with a great smile and eyes that could pierce clear through you. So, that day God instructed me to paint a portrait of Him to share to the world. One that realistically represented the vision He would give to me.

I always felt since Jesus was God's only son and God created everything, He certainly would have created Jesus to be the ideal man. In addition to His perfect and sinless nature, why wouldn't God make Jesus the most handsome, strong, Jewish man who was ever born? That is exactly the vision He gave me that day. A handsome man full of strength, with eyes that follow you wherever you go, and welcoming smile that clearly speaks, "I love you"!

There was only one problem with this equation. I was not a portrait artist and for that matter, I really hadn't oil painted since I was a little boy. It's pretty easy to blow off an unrealistic notion like that and just say, "Sorry God, but I'm not qualified for that job". Unfortunately, when God gets an idea in His mind, He pretty much sticks with it. I came home Sunday night and could hardly sleep for three nights. If you knew me, you would know sleeping is not one of my problems. After three nights of restless sleep, I finally gave in and went to Hobby Lobby to see about getting some supplies to do this job He was calling me to do.

When I got there, I was blown away at the cost of oil paints, brushes, canvases, and all the necessary items I needed to get this job done. As I was standing in the aisle, I prayed to God to give me an answer to this problem. I only had an extra $50.00 at the time and the cost of supplies I felt I needed went way into the hundreds of dollars. After all, I felt I needed the best of everything to do this for Him. But God, answered me very clearly by saying, "get the cheapest of everything, I'll take care of making it the best".

So that is exactly what I did and the supplies were just under $49.00. I guess the rest of the story is pretty much a miracle in my mind. Since I had never painted a portrait and had not painted with oils since the second grade, I was clueless what I was doing. With the Holy Spirit guiding my hands, I was truly amazed at how the painting began to look just like the image Jesus placed in my mind. I would never begin to say that this is exactly what Jesus looks like. I do know it is the image He gave me and there is absolutely no way I could have created the painting without Him working through me. You may see the painting at http://www.divinemissions.com/ .

My hope and prayer is He will use this painting and this story to touch many lives and bring those who are lost to know Him. May we always listen to the little whispers from Him and always be honored to be His children and servants.

Thank you, God. Thank you for giving me the talent of being a portrait oil painter. You gave me this gift, Lord, and my gift back to you is to use this talent to make your people happy and for them to be able to view a memorable picture of their loved ones turned into an oil painting.

Story of the Photo and Painting

The father of this young man is a pastor at a local church in Huntsville. He had a call one morning that his son had been discovered in his apartment dead.

As there were few pictures of Ryan at this age, I cropped his girl friend out of the photo and painted an oil painting of Ryan for his Father and Ryan’s family.

When Pastor Edmonds came to visit me with his beautiful wife, Cindy, and daughter, Anna, he was escorted to my studio. He had no idea why his wife insisted to come see me. As he walked into my studio he saw an oil painting of his deceased son, Ryan Michael Edmonds. Tears streamed down his face as he looked at his son. This is a memory that will last a life time and I hope that it will bring comfort to him and to the family.

About Ryan:

Born: 5/29/91 Died: 7/21/10

Ryan loved music and playing his guitar. He also loved the outdoors. As he was riding his beloved horse, “Ghost”, he felt like he was one with the earth and a free spirit.

And then one day, Ryan rode away to the wind to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

God gives us all a gift and what we do with that gift is our gift back to Him.

Time for a few updates on my art work:

2. I will be at First Fridays in Florence next Friday, April 1st. My booth is right across from Rosie's Cantina on Court Street. Hope to see some of you there.

3. I have set some artistic goals for myself this year to paint some landscapes that are not my usual subject matter. I have completed two of those goals so far....a storm scene and a snow scene, both of which you can find on the landscape page of my website. Next up will be an urban scene from Beale Street in Memphis, which I visited for the first time this month. I hope to complete a nocturnal landscape and a rainy day scene later on in the year. Shortly after the last devotion my mother-in-law, who suffers from Parkinson, fell and broke her hip. During the past 4 months she has been in the hospital four times, rehab once and a clinic for evaluation once. She was completely bed ridden, needing 24-hour care, until the middle of January. She has endured a lot of suffering both physically and mentally. She is doing much better, but still weak and bound to a wheelchair.

Needless to say, we have had to make major adjustments to become the primary caretakers for my in-laws who live next door and our two sons who still live at home. Some of you have been caretakers of terminally ill family members and seen first hand the suffering and toll it takes. I now realize in a small way the Lord used what we went though mentally, physically and spiritually to care for our nephew to prepare us for this. All of a sudden that whole event doesn’t seem so random.

Once again the Lord prompts me to write out of life's experiences, but filtered through the truth of His Word. How does suffering fit into God’s plan for our lives? Doesn’t it seem to be completely counterproductive? Surely the time and energy spent could be better used to expand the Kingdom. In prayerful contemplation the Lord has lead me to several passages to summarize how suffering fits into His plans.

Now, it would take weeks to go into all the theological discussion on where suffering comes from, but it boils down to three main sources: the spiritual forces of evil, the wages of mans sin and the decay of fallen nature. Our discussion, however, is how suffering fits into God’s plans. Let me begin by saying there is one overarching reason and we get a sense of it in John 9:2,3 where we read, “And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was in order that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Also, in John 11:4 concerning Lazarus, “But when Jesus heard it, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” We don’t like to be faced with it, but suffering is a way God shows His glory, character and plan.

The secondary reasons for suffering are numerous, but there are five that I see consistently in scripture related to punishment, witness, faith, growth and comfort . . . all to the Glory of God by making Himself known. Over the next several devotions we will look at them a little closer.

My current body of work is fairly diverse ranging from a skateboarder in flight to a number of drawings which honor those in military service. My favorite subject is marine life as they seem to glide effortlessly through the cool water. I find these scenes very soothing.

I work primarily with oils and acrylics on canvas but also like pen & ink and pencil. Lately I have also worked on projects involving antique doors and a multi-dimensional mural.

I enjoy working alongside my colleagues at 16 Main Gallery in Madison and feel blessed to be a part of that community and environment. I believe I was given a gift to not only enjoy but to share.

Much of what I do is custom and includes portraits as well as paintings and drawings which capture special memories. Helping someone to provide a unique and special gift is an experience I love being a part of.

There are two scriptures that are special to me with regard to my artistic activities.

1 Peter 4:10 "Each one should use whatever gift he has recieved to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in it's various forms."

Since I consider my ability to be a gift from God, my goal is to continually use it to serve where ever possible. I have been blessed with many opportunities to do this.

I also sign my paintings with EX31, a reference to Exodus 31:1-6:
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all who are gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you.

I believe that our abilities are given for a specific purpose..to glorify the Lord. This is my acknowledgment of that. It is my hope that this will provide opportunities to communicate the gospel message.

I am a Christian artist from Archdale, North Carolina. I was raised in Farmer, N.C., with the Uwharrie Mountains and a country setting as my surrounding landscape.

I was born in 1977. I recognized my God-given talent for painting at the age of 16. It is my goal as an artist to replicate the beauty of God's creation and capture the majesty of His handiwork through painting. He is the ultimate artist and it is my obligation and privilege to honor Him with my work.

I have been featured in many news publications including: The Winston-Salem Journal, The Courier Tribune, The High Point Enterprise, The Thomasville Times, The Denton Orator, The Randolph Guide, The Newton Observer, and The Archdale-Trinity News. I have also won awards for my artwork such as: the Randolph County Superintendant's Choice Award, and the Paul Green Multimedia Award, presented by the North Carolina Society of Historians, Inc.

My artwork can be seen in art galleries, churches, homes, businesses, and restaurants. My work ranges from portraits on canvas, landscapes, still-lifes, murals on walls, ceilings, floors, faux finishes, and even furniture. Acrylic and latex are my preferred medium.

My favorite bible verse is Is. 46:9-10, "Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am] God, and [there is] none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: "

These are my favorite verses because it gives me an understanding that there is nothing that God is not in control of, so I can completely rest in Him.

Many have asked Lisa why she signs her work with EX 31 instead of her name. Lisa explains "EX 31 stands for the 31st chapter of the book of Exodus in which we learn that the Lord had chosen specific people and filled them with the skill they needed to build the Tent of Meeting and all of the articles of worship. I believe we have been given abilities from Him which we need to exercise and make sure He gets the honor every time."

ATHENS, AL -- Name: Diane Lehr

Faith home: I'm a Christian, but I find it difficult to tell people what church I attend, although I love my church very much. It's like telling people what team you are for and that immediately divides people.

Work: I spent over 25 years as an R.N., primarily pediatric. Currently, I am an artist and a community servant with two non-profit boards, Spirit of Athens for downtown revitalization and Art On the Square Arts League in Athens.

Role model: I have many role models. I believe that my taste and the art I create is eclectic, mixed media and child-like. Most of my role models have been more solid in their belief systems than I, and I have been inspired by them, without becoming them.
I believe we are all called to be who we are meant to be in God's purpose for us. Not God's general will, but personally for each one of us.

A tough time faith helped you through: My mother had cancer from 1997-1999. I would take charge, do all I could do to help, and then I'd say, "God, please please please... OK. Now I've got to do all these other things and then I'll get back to you, God."
I was with her through much suffering as she fought the disease. By May 1999, she was very sick from chemo and unable to get out of bed.

Then, on May 24, I was shot in the back on my front porch by an armed assailant known in Memphis as The Evergreen Phantom... Continued at link below
